We lead the ATLAS Midwest Tier2 Center (MWT2), founded in 2005 by the University of Chicago and Indiana University and joined in 2011 by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Mark Neubauer, local PI), which federates data centers at the three campuses. As of 2026 it provides more than 40,000 CPU cores and 25 PB of storage, integrated into the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid and accessible to every member of the international ATLAS Collaboration.
The Analysis Facility at UChicago offers U.S. ATLAS physicists and their collaborators interactive notebooks, Dask clusters, GPUs and HTCondor batch computing alongside production services such as ServiceX, XCache and REANA. It serves more than 850 registered users and is the testbed for our agentic analysis and operations work.
We also operate a large analytics cluster for the ATLAS Distributed Computing operations team, built on Elasticsearch and Kibana, lead the collaboration’s new conditions-data caching layer of regional Varnish proxies and a Kubernetes-hosted Frontier service, and are developing AEGIS, an agentic operations platform that provides operational intelligence for ATLAS computing operations. Our R&D platform, RP1, validates new patterns before they move into production.
