AI-native Research with CLARIPHY

CLARIPHY, the Community Laboratory for AI-native Research in Physics, is a national collaboration of universities and laboratories working to build an AI-native research ecosystem for nuclear and particle physics. Its community whitepaper, “Building an AI-native Research Ecosystem for Experimental Particle Physics” (arXiv:2602.17582), organizes the field’s AI vision around four grand challenges; Rob Gardner is a co-author.

The Lab’s engagement centers on the From Data to Discovery challenge: agent-orchestrated analysis. Giordon Stark co-organized the AI Agentic Analysis Systems session at the September 2026 CLARIPHY collaboration meeting in Madison, which set up a standing cross-experiment forum and a curated public index of skills, MCP servers and agent tooling for high energy physics. Our Elwood framework is one of the facility demonstrators on the IRIS-HEP agentic-analysis roadmap that this effort tracks.

We also hosted the CLARIPHY workshop “Open (and Closed) Data in the Age of AI” at the University of Chicago in April 2026, and the Open Data Facility on RP1 is being developed with the CLARIPHY Open Data and AI working group.

Cyberinfrastructure for the Large Hadron Collider

We lead the ATLAS Midwest Tier2 Center, providing more than 40,000 CPU cores and 25 PB of storage integrated into the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid, and operate the Analysis Facility at UChicago for U.S. ATLAS physicists.

High-Throughput Computing for KOTO

We connect the University of Chicago KOTO group, led by Yau Wah, to the Open Science Pool and to campus storage, so the search for an ultra-rare neutral kaon decay at J-PARC can run its simulation and analysis at scale.
